Our chorus, a member of Sweet Adelines International (SAI) meets regularly to practice, socialize, perform and sing a cappella harmony, barbershop style. We are looking for singers to join the thousands of members worldwide who value the joy of singing chord-ringing, fun-filled music.

Sweet Adelines choruses and quartets perform four-part a cappella harmony, barbershop style. Whatever tone your voice, there is a singing part for you. The music includes special arrangements of today’s ballads and upbeat songs, popular show tunes, and even jazz. Members say that singing the satisfying sounds of barbershop harmony provides a rich, rewarding experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be able to read music?
It’s a big help if you can read music, but it isn’t essential. We provide you with learning tapes and help from your section leader to learn the songs and reach the required standard.
Do I have to be a trained singer?
No. You must have at least average singing ability, be able to hold your own part and learn the barbershop style. Previous singing experience and training is an added benefit.
What are the benefits of membership?

Are there any health benefits?
Many studies done over a number of years have focused on the health benefits of singing and the evidence is overwhelming – singing is good for you. It releases endorphins into your system and makes you feel energized and uplifted. Singing gives the lungs a workout, tones abdominal and intercostals muscles and the diaphragm, and stimulates circulation.
What is the competition aspect of Sweet Adelines International?
Members are entitled to participate in competitions at regional and international levels. Judges give detailed feedback on performances, which can be used as a learning tool to improve performance of the individual as well as the group. Competitions represent exciting opportunities to travel, perform and learn.
Why should I sing with The Melbourne Chorus?
Singing and friendships are the main reasons our member join and stay with the organization. Our singing hobby allows you to get involved with performing and competitions, which add excitement and challenge to your musical experience. Many members find their own personal development a thrill and their self-confidence grows as they learn singing and skills they may have never known before.
How much does it cost?
The costs of joining Sweet Adelines International is favorable in comparison with other hobbies, such as sporting activities. Average dues for chorus membership are $50 per month, which covers weekly rehearsals. There is a one off joining fee of approximately $200. There are also make-up and costume costs, but these are paid over time and usually not within the first couple of months. Other costs that may be incurred include travel and competition registration fees when we compete, which is no more than once a year and attendance is not compulsory.
